What We List on the Find a Free Little Art Gallery Website

We list primarily Free Little Art Galleries and outdoor micro galleries, organized by country, region and state/province. When we started, we set out to list FLAGs, and since then, there’s been a bit of a boom in outdoor micro galleries and also combinations – there are some FLAGs out there that are sometimes locked, and display-only, and sometimes unlocked, and it’s a FLAG. We’re happy to list micro galleries and have begun to include those in the state/province listings, along with the FLAGs.

We also list supply cabinets, such as those for sharing art and craft supplies, yarn, handmade ink, and the like. If it’s connected to art and creativity, we’ll list it!

What about Sidewalk Joy?

The PDX Dinorama account has Sidewalk Joy covered pretty well – those are generally exchanges that are not in a box – such as exchange centers for mugs, key chains, Matchbox cars, painted rocks, plastic dinosaurs or rubber duckies. (I love all of it!)

If you have a FLAG and a sidewalk joy type exchange, we’ll totally list that as part of your listing. If you have only the sidewalk joy thing, you can add yourself to the Sidewalk Joy Google Map. No need to duplicate efforts too much!

To get listed here, there’s a short google form and I ask for a photo. The link to the form is here: https://findafreelittleartgallery.com/contact

  1. So how are these supposed to work if someone mails their art to a FLAG, are they sending it away forever? or do they get it back after it has been on show for a set length of time? Or do they get sent someone else’s art in exchange? I am very curious, I know how the book boxes work it is usually a take one leave one system.

    1. Many FLAGs go with the motto, “Make Art, Take Art, Love Art,” something like that. It doesn’t have to be a one for one trade in the moment, but hopefully if someone takes a piece of art, they might return to give a piece of art. If you’re giving a piece of art by mail, you’re mailing it off for that FLAG host to place it in the FLAG for someone to take away.

Micro Galleries are display only spaces, that may be indoors or outdoors. Most of those work with artists to put on shows, many have some sort of application process. Adding to the confusion, there are some hybrid boxes, that are a micro gallery (display only) when locked, and a FLAG when unlocked. I hope that helps!
